What is Centre for Comparative Law?

The Centre is a research institute of the Law Faculty of Charles University in Prague. The Centre combines foundational research with applied research. Within the latter, the Centre assists in the application of law and preparation of law reform.

What are the aims of the Centre?

The research aims of the Centre are systematic and comparative research of Civil and European law and its neighboring fields. The inevitable part of its mission is an examination of the methodological principles for comparative law analysis. The Centre combines foundational research with applied research. Within the latter, the Centre assists in the application of law and preparation of law reform.

What are the means used by the Centre?

The Centre realizes its aims in thee basic forms: research projects, lectures and via expert opinions.
The Centre processes research projects on many topics. It focuses both on big projects of fundamental importance and on less difficult analyses of actual questions.
The Centre organizes international and national conferences hold by main experts in particular legal areas. Apart from that, the Centre organizes regular lectures on highly actual topics (see question No. 4).

Finally, upon a request, the Centre is ready to prepare an expert opinion on a specific, preferably actual, issue that belongs to its research area.

Does the Centre organize educational actions?

The Centre organizes educational actions where it presents results of its research, as well as preliminary outputs. At these actions, internal and external researchers of the Centre analyze specific problems – in the course of discussion that follows the presentation, the audience can challenge the correctness of the presented arguments. Besides the results of the research itself, the Centre organizes conferences, seminars and colloquia in cooperation with other institutions. These activities relate, among others, to research projects of Ph.D. students, foreign guests of the Centre and, occasionally, research workers other academic institutions.

Does the Centre organize regular educational actions?

The Centre organizes a cycle of seminars hold by internal and external researchers as well as by main guests of the Centre. The seminars are usually held twice a month on Thursday at 17:30.

Who the Centre cooperates with?

The Centre cooperates with private and public institutions. The Centre also cooperates with institutions that take part in the legislation process. The Centre and its researchers are members of various international institutions. The cooperation with these institutions represents a natural part of the Centre’s activity.

What are the research projects of the Centre?

The Centre is involved in many research projects either directed by the Centre itself or through the researchers of the Centre who are members of international research groups.

Is the Centre open to external cooperation?

The Centre is open to external cooperation with young lawyers as well as with academic experts and experienced lawyers. The external cooperation is possible on specific projects presented in the section of Research projects.

The Centre also welcomes impulses and offers of new issues for research.

Is the library of the Centre open for public?

The Centre has a library (that is a part of the Library of the Faculty of Law) that contains essential domestic and foreign publications from its research area.
The library of the Centre shall be available for public. The publications shall be available only on attendance basis.

Is it possible to follow the activity of the Centre regularly?

The Centre publishes an electronic information bulletin. The bulletin is available on the websites of the Centre and also sent to the interested persons via e-mail.
